Organizing and decluttering have become my go-to forms of therapy. There’s somehow always something to be given away. Since becoming a mom, these simple acts feel like a productive me-time. Little did I know these two practices would become an integral form of self-care. Honestly, nothing brings me more relief, and hence, joy, than seeing things neatly kept in their proper place.
As a sensitive soul, the constant visual clutter around me can be the number one reason for overwhelm. Trying to keep up with the mess tires me out more than I ever realized. The mental load it ends up adding on to is real. Sure, picking up toys and books again can be exhausting—but trust me, the trouble is worth it. I imagine the calm I would feel when I walk into a space where everything is tidy, especially when you’re a mom who doesn’t have much help or the proverbial ‘village’. It’s utterly blissful!
I know I’m working on overcoming perfectionistic tendencies. Becoming a mom forces you to address that part of you and get rid of it almost instantaneously—and for good. Honestly, it isn’t quite sustainable. I’ve suffered firsthand.
Your Sacred Space Matters
Let’s get real—arranging things isn’t always possible or easy to do. Whether you’re a new mom or simply navigating a busy season of life, trying to structure and order in the chaos can be challenging. But my creative space? It felt like she was calling me, too. She needed my love as well. Luckily, she wasn’t as demanding as a baby. She was generous enough to have me sit in the creative studio for an hour a day. Or whatever little time was possible.
And here’s what I’ve realized over time: my creative studio doesn’t have to be Pinterest picture-perfect fancy. It could be one room in the house or just a cozy corner by the window to call my own. Any place that sparks your creativity and feels like yours is sacred and worth protecting.
Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved reading, writing, and making art. So when I was setting up my space, I knew it needed to hold all the integral pieces of me—books, notebooks, art supplies—all within reach in one place.. I used to work out of our basement, but the cold and lack of sunlight left me feeling dull and uninspired.
Hence, I decided to move to a space with a big window and natural light, and it’s been life-changing. Sunlight is my soul fuel. That proverbial “window” for us dreamers? It’s real. I’m happier, more creative, and so much more at peace in my new space.
My Creative Sanctuary
My cosy corner in the house and the world I’d like to call it. Now I’m surrounded by my favorite books, an endless collection of journals, and my colors and paints. All of them are intrinsic to who I am. I like having everything close—it makes the creative process flow much better. I can easily pick up anything I need- a different Art medium, a brand new notebook, or an unread book of a preferred genre.
My creative, at-home studio is my sanctuary. It’s where I feel most myself, alive, and at peace. I feel at home and most inspired. It helps me dream big again and switch off all the noise. I’m a happy baby!
Why Decluttering Feeds the Soul
We’re all aware of the benefits of decluttering. But when it comes to our creative spaces, it’s even more profound. When your space feels open, organized, and tidy, your mind follows. Aesthetics are as important; visual appeal and orderliness can spark many new ideas, inspiration, and even calm.
How to Organize Your Creative Space (Even on a Budget)
Here are some ideas that worked for me:
- Envision Your Ideal Space
Take a moment to breathe and imagine how you want it to feel. Cozy, minimalist, Boho, or bright and colorful? Think of the elements you love—then gather items that fit that vision, that composition, without overspending. Believe me, the Thrift store can be such a goldmine. I was new to the concept till I moved to Canada. And, omg! I’ve stumbled upon such gems of items for a throw-away price. Such as this cute little vintage-themed cup in the picture below.
- Keep It Minimal: Less Is More
A clutter-free space promotes creativity and flow of energy. Start small—pick what you don’t need, and keep only what truly brings you joy or is essential for your art. And, you can give away what’s not required with love and gratitude. The item served a purpose and shall now offer someone else. - Grouping Similar Items Together saves time
- All brushes in one pot.
- All pencils together.
- All brushes in one pot.
- Books of the same genre side by side. I LOVE placing my books in that manner- according to genre or theme. It makes things easier to find—and more beautiful to look at, which is the best part.
- Inspiring Wall Art
Ever since I decided to decorate my main wall with my artwork, I feel so inspired and happier every time I enter the studio. Even subliminal. I’ve also hung up an old baby picture, some important quotes that motivate me, and important tasks to do. I have a side portrait of a lion framed in my studio that I love. My spirit animal reminds me of my quiet strength and resilience with just one glance. I also use sleek black frames to keep a neat, elegant theme. - Use Rolling Carts for Storage
They’re perfect for moving your supplies around, especially if your space is small. Plus, they keep things neat and tucked away. It can also be used by your toddler as your walker and to move it around as if it were yet another toy! Haha 🙂 - Add a Touch of Nature
Plants breathe life into any room. They calm the energy and connect you back to the earth. I love having green friends around as I create. They are an instant mood uplifter and an element that always elevates any space.
Final Thoughts
Creating a sacred, organized space isn’t about perfection. It’s about making room for your soul to breathe, to dream, and to create. Whether you’re a new mom or just someone craving clarity, know that your space can nurture you.
What does your creative corner look like? How do you bring order and inspiration into your life? I’d love to know.
